![]() ![]() Another way to prevent a crowded appearance is to make a conscious effort to enhance lighting both artificial and natural. You want to aim to keep all other areas of the kitchen as empty as possible to avoid the room looking overcrowded. When designing a u-shaped kitchen, it is important to focus your efforts on incorporating all of your needs into the three-walled workspace. Both small and large kitchens can be transformed into a spacious space with clean lines and a contemporary appearance. As worktops are uninterrupted and span across three walls, it means that the u-shaped layout is suited to kitchens of all scales. It is ideal for utilising all wall space while freeing up as much floor space as possible, making it perfect for those who regularly entertain guests or have a passion for cooking. ![]() In a u-shaped kitchen, three walls are connected seamlessly through a lining of cabinets, worktops and integrated appliances. Here we run through the top five kitchen layout options, along with the type of home that they are best suited to.Īs the most practical kitchen layout, adopting the u-shaped style means that your design will be heavily revolved around storage solutions. It is vital to take into consideration the size of your kitchen before going ahead with any plans as you want to avoid a space that looks overcrowded. Every property is unique, as is every homeowner, which means that the style, layout and interior design of your kitchen will always differ. Whether you are the host of the all-important Christmas Day dinner or you adore inviting friends round on a Friday evening, a kitchen that encompasses all things practical yet welcoming is imperative. A Guide On The Best Kitchen Layouts For Entertaining So, without further ado, let’s delve deeper into the best kitchen layouts for entertaining. Each comes alongside its own attractive quirks which make them sought-after for many homeowners. With this in mind, if you are in the process of considering a kitchen reconfiguration, then you would be pleased to know that there are a plethora of fantastic layout possibilities. A kitchen that is not only practical and functional but welcoming, cosy and aesthetically pleasing creates the ideal haven for entertaining guests. It is the hotspot for cooking up delicious food, enjoying evenings of laughter and catching up with loved ones. It also frees up valuable floor space, making it ideal for large families. The kitchen is commonly seen as the heart of the home. A kitchen island gives you extra prep space, allowing you to cook meals while keeping food out of sight. More Counter Top Area – Since the corners of the L shape are angled, you'll get more countertop space than in a typical kitchen.Īn l-shaped kitchen with an island offers even more functionality.Easier Access To Appliances - Since the corners of the kitchen are angled, you'll have less distance to walk to reach the refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, stove, and sink. This means you won't feel cramped when entertaining guests. Better Flow – When you have an L-shaped kitchen, you'll have a lot more open space between the kitchen and dining areas. For instance, if you need to store pots and pans, you can easily put them away in the corner of the kitchen. Increased Storage Space – Because the corners of the L-shaped kitchen create a triangle, there is significantly more storage space than in a conventional kitchen. ![]() ![]() There are numerous benefits to choosing an L-shaped kitchen instead of a standard rectangle. This corner creates a unique shape that allows for additional storage space and a larger work surface. They meet at a 90-degree angle, creating a corner that runs perpendicular to the rest of the room. An L-shaped kitchen is a kitchen that has two walls that run parallel to each other but not directly opposite one another. ![]()

Signal corp wwii12/31/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Despite the assignment of Lieutenant Colonel George O. The Aviation Section began in turbulence, first as an alternative to making aviation in the Army a corps independent of the Signal Corps, then with friction between its pilots, who were all young and on temporary detail from other branches, and its leadership, who were more established Signal Corps officers and non-pilots. For historic convenience, however, the air arm is most commonly referred to by its official designation, the Aviation Section, Signal Corps (ASSC), and is the designation recognized by the United States Air Force as its predecessor for this period. From July 1914 until May 1918 the aviation section of the Signal Corps was familiarly known by the title of its administrative headquarters component at the time, seen variously as the Aeronautical Division, Air Division, Division of Military Aeronautics, and others. The Aviation Section, Signal Corps was created by the 63rd Congress (Public Law 143) on 18 July 1914 after earlier legislation to make the aviation service independent from the Signal Corps died in committee. The Aviation Section organized the first squadrons of the aviation arm and conducted the first military operations by United States aviation on foreign soil. It absorbed and replaced the Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps, and conducted the activities of Army aviation until its statutory responsibilities were suspended by President Woodrow Wilson in 1918. The Aviation Section, Signal Corps, was the aerial warfare service of the United States from 1914 to 1918, and a direct statutory ancestor of the United States Air Force. ![]()

2018 equinox dates12/31/2023 ![]() In the Northern Hemisphere, the March equinox heralds the beginning of spring and is referred to as the spring or vernal equinox (vernal comes from the Latin term "ver" for spring). However, the meteorological beginning of these seasons is March 1 and Sept. The equinoxes mark the astronomical beginning of spring or autumn, depending on the hemisphere. Related: Why the autumnal equinox doesn't fall on the same day every year The planet's orientation towards the sun is also constantly shifting, tweaking the timing of the equinox. These shifting dates are because an Earth year is not exactly 365 days: There is an extra quarter of a day (6 hours) that accumulates each year, causing the date of the equinox to shift. And, because of how sunrise and sunset are defined, the equilix occurs a few days before the spring equinox and a few days after the autumn equinox, according to the U.K.'s Met Office.Įquinoxes don't necessarily occur on the same day each year, rather they happen around or on March 20 and Sept. National Weather Service.Įquilux ("equal light"), on the other hand, is the term for when day and night are exactly equal. "On the equinox and for several days before and after the equinox, the length of day will range from about 12 hours and 6 and one-half minutes at the equator, to 12 hours and 8 minutes at 30 degrees latitude, to 12 hours and 16 minutes at 60 degrees latitude," according to the U.S. ![]() Also, the atmosphere refracts the sun's light and it continues to travel to "nighttime" Earth for a short period, even after the sun has dipped below the horizon. And because the sun is a disk rather than a point source of light, Earth sees just a few more minutes of extra light (rather than darkness) during an equinox. This is because sunrise occurs when the tip of the sun edges over the horizon, and sunset is defined as the moment when the other edge of the sun disappears under the skyline. However, day and night are still not exactly equal during an equinox, according to EarthSky, although it is very close.ĭuring an equinox, Earth gets a few more minutes of light than darkness. Glass weather indicator12/31/2023 ![]() The glass is shaped somewhat like a sealed teapot - a rounded globe or cylinder with a long spout starting near the base of the main body and extending upward. How Does the Goethe Storm Glass Work?Ī Goethe storm glass is a type of water barometer, which uses a glass bulb filled with colored water to show changes in atmospheric air pressure. Its modern iteration is attributable to the German statesman, scientist, and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who built on work by Evangelista Torricelli - a 17th-century student and contemporary of Galileo - to create his own version of a water barometer. The Goethe barometer is generally believed to be the oldest type of barometer in the world, with examples dating back thousands of years. It’s filled with colored water, which reacts to changes in barometric pressure in the atmosphere outside the glass. Unlike the closed Fitzroy glass, the Goethe storm glass - also called a Cape Cod storm glass, thunder glass, or water barometer - is a glass container with a narrow spout that’s open to the air. ![]() Since Fitzroy’s time, weather scientists have repeatedly tried to gauge the accuracy of the storm glass and found that, at best, its predictions are accurate about 50% of the time. Large flakes: Overcast on warm days, snow in winter Small dots in the liquid: Fog or high humidity These storm glasses generally come with a chart based on Fitzroy’s original observations:Ĭloudy liquid: Cloudy skies, chance of rain How To Predict Weather With a Fitzroy Storm Glass While scientists aren’t certain exactly what influences the formation of crystals - and the shape they take - most have concluded that temperature changes seem to be the most important. The patterns can range from cloudy liquid to intricate crystals resembling snowflakes, stars, spirals, and threads. As the weather changes, the chemicals in the glass crystallize in various patterns that are said to predict the weather. There are a number of different recipes for making the solution, but most include camphor, ammonium nitrate, and sodium nitrate. The Fitzroy storm glass is a closed glass container, often shaped like a raindrop, holding a supersaturated mixture of alcohol, water, and various chemicals. Under his command, the British crown distributed storm glasses to small fishing communities throughout the British Isles. Fitzroy was also hugely influential in the history of meteorology, spearheading efforts to collect weather data and make it more accessible to fishermen and others who relied on it. ![]() He famously captained the HMS Beagle that carried Charles Darwin on his voyage of exploration. While no one is sure exactly who invented the Fitzroy storm glass, it was popularized by Admiral Robert Fitzroy. Here’s a quick look at both devices and how they work. ![]() There are two very different historical meteorological devices that share the name “storm glass” or “weather glass.” Both became popular at about the same time - the late 1700s - and both were widely used to predict changes in weather using liquid in a glass container. What is a storm glass, and what makes it work? Perhaps most importantly, does a storm glass accurately predict the weather? Here’s what we know. Storm glasses are among those early inventions that still hold a fascination for modern weather watchers. Some of the best-known names in history have dabbled in the science of weather forecasting - Leonardo da Vinci invented an early anemometer and hygrometer, for example, and Galileo created an accurate and beautiful thermometer. Throughout history, scientists have been inventing devices to help predict the weather. ![]()

Kira professes her feelings for Sonny, and Zeus ultimately relents, allowing her to be with Sonny for "a moment, or maybe forever". Inside the realm of the gods, Kira's father Zeus denies Sonny's plea to let Kira come back to Earth, and despite Kira's mother Mnemosyne interceding for Sonny and Kira, Zeus sends Sonny back to Earth. Sonny manages to enter Kira's home by roller skating into the Muses' mural. Sonny gets upset at the revelation, and Kira departs Earth having fulfilled her duty.ĭanny tells Sonny to keep pursuing Kira, encouraging Sonny not to give up on his dreams like he did after his own muse left him. She was sent to inspire the creation of Xanadu, but she cannot stay despite their mutual feelings. The night before the club's opening, however, Kira confesses to Sonny that she is actually Terpsichore, one of the Nine Muses of Olympus. All the while, Sonny and Kira fall in love with each other, culminating in a magically animated sequence. Kira encourages Sonny and Danny to open a nightclub at the auditorium called Xanadu, and the two begin working together as partners. Like Sonny, Danny was also romantically involved with a singer in the 1940s who resembled Kira her subsequent departure resulted in his own loss of creative passion. Sonny also meets and befriends Danny McGuire, a former big band orchestra leader turned construction mogul. Sonny eventually traces her across town to the aforementioned auditorium, where she introduces herself as Kira, though refuses to tell him anything about herself. The photographer notes that the woman was not supposed to be on the cover, but suddenly appeared in a few of the shots. The cover shows the mysterious woman Sonny encountered earlier roller skating in front of an abandoned art deco auditorium. Having returned to his old job of painting album cover reproductions at AirFlo Records, Sonny is tasked with painting an album cover reproduction for a group called the 9 Sisters. ![]() She kisses him before skating away, leaving him confused. Sonny Malone is a struggling artist in Los Angeles attempting to make a living by freelancing. The film has since become a cult classic for the way it mixes the storyline from an old-fashioned 1940s fantasy with modern aesthetics featuring late 1970s and early 1980s rock and pop music on the soundtrack as well as for fans of Newton-John. number one hit for Newton-John, and the title track (by Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra) reached number one in the United Kingdom and several other countries around the world. Despite the lackluster performance of the film, the soundtrack album became a huge commercial success around the world, and was certified double platinum in the United States. A box office disappointment, it earned negative critical reviews and was an inspiration (along with Can't Stop the Music) for the creation of the Golden Raspberry Awards to recognize the worst films of the year. Xanadu was released in the United States on August 8, 1980, by Universal Pictures. This city appears in Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, an 1816 poem that is quoted in the film. The title is a reference to the nightclub in the film, which takes its name from Xanadu, the summer capital of Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty in China. It features music by Newton-John, Electric Light Orchestra, Cliff Richard, and the Tubes. The film stars Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly in his final film role.
